My current project is an American Gladiators mod using the Unreal Tournament 2003 engine. There have been one or two American Gladiators games in the past (NES, and SNES), but surprisingly none since we ushered in the era of 3D gaming. Although there were a number of quite distinct competitive events over the lifespan of the show, one in particular has been begging for an Unreal mod.

Enter the game of Assault.

Using reference photos found in various places on the internet, I was able to build what I believe to be a very accurate recreation of the wondrous game of Assault. The scaling was particularly easy to mimic, thanks to the show's straightforward grid motif. Check out the screenshot below for an idea of what this looks like from the Gladiator's point of view.

The next phase of this project is to code some believable AI for the Gladiator who sits atop the podium trying to pick off the contender with tennis balls. Of course, I was thinking that a rocket launcher would be much more...appropriate. As you may or may not remember, the object of the game is for the contender to "kill" the gladiator by hitting the target above the gladiator's head, or crossing the finish line before time expires. The contender must stop at each of the five stations along the way and fire the projectile(s) that reside there before they are allowed to advance to the next station. If the contender is unable to hit the target, they can still receive a few points by crossing the finish line before time expires. The contender loses the game if they are hit by the gladiator.

At this point in time, it is my intention to make a fully playable mod of the game of Assault, as seen in American Gladiators. For the time being, I will be using standard Unreal Tournament 2003 weaponry, which although slightly more violent than the actual projectiles used on the show, will still provide for an enjoyable gaming experience. After implementing accurate scoring, timing, and enemy AI, I may tackle the task of creating custom American Gladiators weapons.
